Kinja'd!!!

Especially when it's the 1986 better looking one with the V6 in it. These were not slow cars after all, and seemed to have the bits in the right places. Cheap track toy?

Kind of want.

There is one of those I see every day on my way to work, and it keeps reminding me.

I have a diabolical plan for one of those...

A Team321 longitudinal rear subframe, and a slight space frame stretch, to convert the car to longitudinal driveline.

Kinja'd!!!

In that subframe, I would mount a Subaru EG33 built engine, with EJ22 pistons and re-ground 6-cylinder cams, for twin-turbocharging.

Kinja'd!!!

I would use a Subaru transaxle, converted to lateral 2WD. (think FWD Subaru, but not front... mid-engined rear drive) with a limited slip diff.

Twin Turbos, Twin intercoolers, feeding right into the EG33's twin throttle-bodies and intake manifold, laid out like a Ferrari 288 GTO or F40 engine bay.

Then, slightly extend and re-craft the back half of the body work to look like the louver slats and side quarter windows of a Giugiaro-designed DeLorean DMC12.

Kinja'd!!!

Fiero obviously took some significant hints from Giugiaro designs like Maserati's Bora, Merak, and DMC12 DeLorean...

John Z DeLorean was also a big proponent of engines other than the common V8... DeLorean was slated to have a rotary engine in it, before the PRV v6 was ultimately chosen, and DeLorean pushed the OHC Pontiac Sprint I6s before leaving GM.

Giorgetto Giugiaro's design influences in the Fiero, and Pontiac's history with John Z. DeLorean, tie it loosely to the Giugiaro-designed SVX, and it's special EG33 DOHC flat 6 engine.

It may not be a direct correlation, but I think Giugiaro and DeLorean would have thought a twin-turbo H6 powered mid-engined, Giugiaro-homage Fiero would be interesting, and not just another V6 or V8 engine swapped, transverse Fiero.

Seems I should be more opt to find a later 5 speed car vs the early 86 4spd. Sadness.

I think there will be a period of dramatic increase in value at some point... considering how many Fieros were chopped apart to make kit cars... I think even the regular 4 banger models might be worth a good bit at some point, just because they escaped being Frankensteined into a fake Ferrari/Lamborghini/etc.

I wanna take an 88 fastback and wedge a K20 into it. I think that engine matches what the character of the rest of the car is.

Not very difficult to swap the engine to an L67 supercharged 3800. I know several in the area to do it. Even on the stock engine they were pretty fun cars, though. Pontiac got them right at the end.

I don't see any reason you would want a Fiero if there are MR2s available on the market. I mean the 4 cylinders were extremely slow and the V6s were only "ok" (still over about 8 seconds to 60 and 1/4 mile in 16 seconds).

For comparison sake, an NA 80's MR2 was around the same or better performance than the V6 Fiero and the supercharged MR2s were over a second or more faster in nearly all aspects. Of course the SW20 turbo MR2s were king being in the mid to high 14's out of the box, but they have been gaining value. I believe the SW20 NA cars were even around the performance of the V6 Fieros and they are a lot nicer cars.

There's a good community out there built around these cars too. I want one. I just don't know that I want one more than I want a 944. It's a consideration though.

Manuals seem to be most of them. V6s are common too. It's the '88 GT that's harder to find and commands higher prices due to the various improvements GM made to it in its final year.

You want an 88GT. I used to have an 86GT with the four speed. Great car for $1500 once everything worked properly. The 88's had way better suspension and brakes

Came here to post this. The upgrades made to the '88 GT and Formula improved the car so much that you'd be an idiot to buy an older Fiero.

Ahh didnt realize it was a 4 speed for the six early on. I drove an early one and it was 5 speed but was a 4 cylinder just always assumed it would be too.

You definitely should own one. All of the stupid issues like the headlights not working, the brake line exploding, or the e brake handle deciding not to work is all part of the fun. It may not be as quick as my R6, but it still puts a smile on my face when I throw it around corners or slam through the gears way too hard on a launch. At this point in time and at this price point, the question is not should I, but more like why haven't I?

If you want a Fiero, get a 1988 model as it has a revised/improved suspension and shouldn't run that much more.
